Anglo American Thermal Coal’s Kromdraai opencast operations require a net dewatering rate of up to 10,000m3 day to continue mining and to meet environmental obligations. While the long-term plan is to treat this water at emalahleni, a short-term solution was required at the south Block operation. The water is typical acid mine drainage, containing high levels of dissolved heavy metals and sulphates with low alkalinity.
For this application, Aveng Water supplied a mobile, modular plant to meet the short-term need. the mobile unit will be decommissioned and moved to another site after two years of operation. Aveng Water owns and operates the plant which is designed with three modules, each treating 2,000m3 day to deliver a zero brine solution.
